It’s Termite Awareness Week

termite1Did you know that March 13-17, 2017 is Termite Awareness Week? We aren’t celebrating termites. Our goal is to save homes and buildings. We believe that the more people know about termites, the better off they will be. To coin a phrase, “termites can eat you out of house and home.

You can treat your home yourself or you can hire a pest control company. A professional knows what to look for. They know the different types of termites that are in your area at different times of the year. They will show you how to spot early signs of new infestation.

A recent survey revealed that the main reason people did not use professional pest control was it was too expensive. Roughly 33% thought they could handle the job themselves. Nine out of 10 people questioned said they would use a pest control company recommended by a friend. One in 5 picked a company out of the yellow pages.

Florida and many other warm, southern states are prime targets for termites. They thrive in warm, moist climates. To give you an idea as to how much a termite can eat, here are some interesting facts:

A termite colony varies in size from just a few workers up to as many as 200,000 workers. Formosan termites can double that number. The average native subterranean termite colony can eat an average of up to 12.9 pounds in a year. It doesn’t sound like much (and these are rough figures), but 12.9 pounds from one colony in a year is a lot of wood. A Formosan termite colony will eat a bit less than twice that amount. Damage can be extensive in a short time.
